Exploring Naples : A journey to the heart of Italy

A few years ago, I had what I would call one of my best ideas ever—to surprise my boyfriend with a weekend trip to Naples for his 25th birthday. Both of us were thrilled, especially since Naples is renowned worldwide as a culinary hotspot. Famous as the birthplace of pizza, this vibrant southern Italian city offers a treasure trove of rich culinary traditions deeply rooted in history and bursting with passion.

Pizza fritta & arancini from Di Matteo : Naples’ histroric pizzeria

One of the first places my Italian friends insisted we visit was Di Matteo, a historic pizzeria that stands as a true institution in the world of Neapolitan pizza. We decided to order everything to go, eager to sample the famed street food staples: pizza fritta and arancini.

The pizza fritta was a revelation—crispy and golden on the outside and wonderfully soft and pillowy inside, filled with a delicate ricotta cream. It immediately reminded me of the Hungarian lángosz, but what set it apart was the incredible lightness and softness of the dough.

The arancini alla bolognese were equally unforgettable. These golden rice balls, bursting with rich ragù and parmesan, were so delicious that we devoured them before I even had a chance to snap a photo. Both dishes were a perfect example of Naples’ mastery in simple yet exceptional flavours.

Rating: 5⭐️ — fantastic prices, incredible food, and an absolute must-try for anyone keen on exploring culinary history through authentic street bites.

Dinner at Ristorante – club nautico della vela

For an early dinner, we craved fresh seafood—naturally, given Naples’ proximity to the sea. Without a reservation or recommendation, we decided to explore the old-fashioned way: by wandering the charming waterfront streets. That’s when we stumbled upon Ristorante di Club Nautico della Vela, perfectly situated near the port with tables set right beside the water. The setting was idyllic, and the seafood just as impressive.

Our meal featured homemade shrimp pasta, a generous plate of fritto misto (mixed fried seafood), and a sautéed medley of mussels, clams, and couteaux (razor clams) in a fragrant white wine sauce. Each bite conveyed the freshness of the sea and the passion of Neapolitan cooking. The combination of simple, high-quality ingredients and the beautiful seaside ambiance made for an unforgettable dining experience.

Rating: 4.5⭐️ — exceptional seafood, stunning location, and warm hospitality that made our meal truly special.

Naples, in every sense, is a city where food tells stories—stories of tradition, innovation, and heartfelt craft. From casual pizza stands to elegant seaside restaurants, it offers a culinary adventure that captivates and delights at every turn. If you’re a food lover with an appetite for history and flavour, Naples deserves a spot at the top of your travel list !
